Hills to climb...

If you have a hill to climb, waiting won't make it smaller.

This is a saying that is on a church board that I pass by everyday and this little gem has been on it for at least a couple of weeks. I have been thinking about this saying a lot. Two weeks ago I hit "onederland" and I kept trying to figure out when it was that I was last at that weight. I remember being 220 for a long time and I remember being 240 for a long time. I can't honestly remember when I was last under 200, but I'm willing to bet is was before I had my first son and he is now 22 years old.

I remember thinking I should do something about my weight when I weighed 220. I didn't. Then I remember thinking I should do something about my weight at 240. I again didn't do anything and before I did choose to do something my starting weight was 262.5. Maybe my journey would have been different if I would have chosen to climb that hill at 220 or even 240.

So to everyone out there waiting to climb those hills - do it now! Waiting will not make it smaller....

I also got to thank in person my doctor that recommended weight watchers to me on Tuesday - she told me (like so many others before her) that I needed to lose weight and she told me that they had a program through Kaiser, but she had always heard great things about Weight Watchers and would recommend them above the other program. I left that appointment (July 31, 2007) and went straight to the Weight Watchers center and the nice ladies who were packing up took my registration fee and had me sign the papers because they knew if they told me they couldn't do it and had me come back, I probably wouldn't.

The toughest thing to do, whether it's lose weight or run a 5K or get a degree as a "non-traditional" student or pretty much anything else, is to start. So many times people are so intimidated to do something different that they get paralyzed and do nothing. And, often, like you waiting until 260 to hit WW, that hill in front of them gets bigger the longer they wait. Luckily, you decided to take that most difficult first step and in the process not only started to reach your own goals, but became an inspiration to everyone who is still standing at the bottom of the hill looking up and watching it get bigger. You should be very proud of yourself. Not only for hitting your own milestones, but for encouraging others to hit theirs.

Out of curiousity, what was "the other" program your doc recommended WW over?

My hill seems gigantic right now. I'm so off my mental game, my physical game and my food game. All of it is a struggle for me right now.

I can imagine your doctor must have been incredibly proud of you! I know I am!

It seems around here, churches have the best sayings. I have one I saw about 3-4 years ago that still sticks with me -- He who angers you, controls you. I have to remind myself of that often. Not weight loss related but still something to remember!

I saw that saying too and it made me think. I am taking a break from my "climb" right now, but happy to be maintaining. I still have a bit of a hill in front of me, but am happy to have at least started on my journey, thanks in large part to you!

That is such a telling saying. Unfortuately it took me 3 kids and 320 lbs before I stepped on that hill or rather mountain in my case :) Congrats on all your hard work!

Wow, can I ever relate to you! I'm very similar in who I am. I just turned 40 and have two kids. 22 and 15. I'm disgustingly happily married. I started my journey Feb 19th of 2007 and have lost 62 lbs, with another 20ish to go. I started on WW, and it taught me amazing things.

Stalk my blog... I'd love to get your opinions!

And thanks for blogging... it's nice to know we aren't alone in our circumstances out here.

Oh, and one final thing. I'm SO stealing that saying... lol.
